About the Artist

I was born in 1962 in California, grew up in Alaska, and went to college in Oregon. Studying painting and art history, I earned my degree in fine art; but my graphic design skills were picked up on the job, learning the craft from printers and prepress folks — and sometimes from mistakes — while supporting myself through college and beyond.

Most recently, I did a brief stint as Creative Director at Storey Publishing (2004–06). Now, I have returned to freelancing as a book designer, art director, typographic consultant, and type designer.

I live with my wife, Carol, in a historic farmhouse in the rural Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts, along with our cats, our whacky pug, and several chickens. Carol is also an artist (you can view her work at her website), and in the summer she operates a small flower farm.
