The essays in this collection were all previously published in Audubon magazine and most were rather short. I chose a relatively tall, narrow format (based on the golden section), in part, to help the articles run longer.

The interior typography (Linotype Monticello) and the use of the swelled rule decoration are an homage to an earlier era of nature writing and publishing. I wanted to place this collection alongside the ranks of Edwin Way Teale and Aldo Leopold.

The interior art by John Burgoyne, whose pen-and-ink style is reminiscent of engraving, completes the design, which is allusive without being anachronistic.

The cover art is taken from two of John J. Audubon’s historic prints.
